    Description

I love advertising memorabilia - I have stacks and stacks of magazines from the 1900's, the 40's and the 50's.  All of these ads are a visual chronology leading up to present day products and mores.  Advertising has changed radically in the last 100 years, often for the good.  Remember the Marlboro Man greeting us from every billboard?  Definitely good riddance to the product, but we'll keep the cowboy. With Cream of Wheat, we kept the product, but moved out of ads
containing stereotypical personifications of African Americans created and disseminated in 1860 to the mid-1900's.  Scholars of marketing
describe and interpret how the cultural meanings and economic, symbolic, and aesthetic values associated with these marketing materials evolved,
we use group level theories, the sociological framework of collective memory, and rubbish theory from social anthropology.
These promotional materials were transformed from acceptable mass-produced commercial advertisements, to despicable representations of a group of people that were "hidden" or destroyed, to highly desirable collectibles.  Having said all of that - here is a offering from 1915 selling Cream of Wheat. The piece measures 9-1/2" X 6-1/2" - truly a beautiful piece.
