Description
Clarence Matthew Baker (1921-1959) was a comic book artist/illustrator best known for drawing early comics heroines like the costumed crimefighter Phantom Lady (where he gained a reputation as one of the best "Good Girl" comic artists of the Golden Age) as well as Romance comics. Baker is the first known African-American artist to find success in the comic-book industry, creating the first known black hero in American comics - Voodah, who debuted in "Crown Comics" #3 in 1945. Baker worked for Fiction House, Fox Comics, Quality Comics and St. John Publications where he provided the art for the very first graphic novel, the digest-sized "It Rhymes With Lust" in 1950. Baker was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2009. Offered here is a rare 1 1/4" pin featuring Baker's art for an atomic bomb-inspired character, Ato McBomb, who was featured in a Baker illustrated storybook that apparently never saw publication. The art seen on this pin was featured on a "Telepic Book Of Cartoons" proof. There is no maker's name or other info printed on the pin. Circa 1940s. Bright, glossy and in excellent condition. Thanks for looking at this auction.
